1. Eternity

Even in the winter, when the heat wasn’t working and they didn’t have the proper attire to battle the cold, he was happy in that little old van. His arm thrown casually over the singers shoulders, squeezing him close. Gerard’s skin is cold as ice, but nothing will keep Frank from touching him tonight. Today marks two years.

Their lips gently press together. It still sends shivers down Frank’s spine.
As the older man begins to pull back, he holds on, sliding his arms around Gerard’s waist. “Not yet.” He whispers. Gerard’s head tilts to the side, a flirtatious smirk playing on his face.

“What more do you want from me?”

“I want forever.”

The little black box seems to appear out of nowhere. With shaking hands, the singer opens it, his fingers rubbing against the velvet; a diamond ring sparkles as the sun hits it through the window.

With tears in his eyes, Gerard murmurs, “You have it.”

Snow falls as the little van goes on. The two men sit in comfortable silence amongst the blare of the radio and the laughter of their band mates. Hands clutched, the ring now resting around Gerard’s finger, they decide they’ll make the announcement later.

They aren’t in a hurry. They have forever.

2. Mary Jane

I want to tell you how I feel.
I want you to know that you mean everything to me, and more.
I want you to know that I think you’re beautiful.
Our bodies entangle, but it means nothing.
Nothing to you.
Our lips collide, but your heart doesn’t pound the way mine does.
It never will.
I want to tell you that I love you.
I want you to feel the same way.
But I mean nothing to you.
And I never will.
You lay sprawled out on your cough, drugged and dazed.
You silently laugh at my silent desires.
With every puff, you mock me.
With every drag, you kill me.
I want to tell you how I feel, even though you won’t ever feel the same.
You have only one love.
You care only about one thing.
And I’ll always be second best.

3. Murder City

The raven-haired boy swings his hips to the beat of the music, hands raised to show off the blood. Alcohol stains his breath, little holes track his veins like pock-marks. Nearby, his pimp watches in lusting approval. The corpse’s meth-head Barbie dolls screams over its torn heart and plucked eye sockets.

The raven-haired whore adds it to his list. The body count grows, full of men who deserved it. Men who dwelled among the City of the Damned. The pimp throws his arms around the whore, drawing him close. Sliding his fingers down the boy’s jeans, he can’t help but fear he’ll meet the same fate as the body on the floor of his dirty night club.

Like a ghost, the boy slithers in the dark, bloodthirsty eyes in a constant search for revenge. The liars, the cheaters, the scammers and pedophiles and dealers. The ones who ruined an innocent little boy. Men like Frank, who thrive off of the soul’s destruction, seeking the weak and the vulnerable and turning them into cold-hearted beasts.

As the boy’s knife slides against Frank’s neck, he realizes he’s just as dirty as the rest. But what could really be expected of those lurking in the shadows of the Murder City?

4. Goodbye Is No Good

“So, uh…where were you? Last night, I mean…you…you didn’t come home.” Gerard peers up from his coffee mug in silence. This is the question he’s been dreading. This is the question Frank has known the answer to for months. “You were with him, weren’t you?”

“He’s my brother-“

“He was fucking you!” The smaller man explodes, hands shaking at his sides. Gerard can’t help but notice how old Frank looks. A thick mask of facial hair covers half his face, dark circles surround his eyes, and he’s got the start of a beer gut. They both know the romance left their relationship long before all this. They both knew Frank allowed it. He got lazy. He got depressed. And Gerard was lonely. But that doesn’t stop Frank from being angry, for being jealous. “He was, wasn’t he?” The crack in his voice doesn’t go unnoticed.

Gerard was always full of excuses. Full of lies. He had successfully evaded this conversation for three months. But now, with his lover’s wide eyes burning into him, being surrounded by the memories of what they were compared to what they are, he knows there’s no more point in trying to hide it.

“Yeah…yeah, he was.”

A brief silence falls over them. They stare at each other, both grasping their mugs that have yet to be drunken out of. Frank is the first to move, setting his mug down in the sink before sliding into a chair. He buries his face in his hands.

Gerard waits for the yelling. For the crying. For anything. But Frank stays where he is, silently.

The yelling starts two hours later. It starts with “Why?” and ends with “Goodbye.”

5. Take It Away

It’s been years since I’ve thought about him. Since I’ve thought about his lips, his eyes, his hair, his smell, his laugh, his voice…oh God, that angelic voice…

It’s been years since I’ve sat down and dusted off those old photo albums, smiling at the ridiculous photographs taken of us when we were young. Reliving walks on the beach, trips through the park, lazy days on the couch clinging tightly to each other and smiling so big it looked like our mouths would fall off. We had so much fun…we were so in love.

But after the crash, the fun was gone. After that accident, it was all gone. And after years- so many painful, awful, dreadful years- of trying to get him to remember me, remember us…he’s dead.

Gerard died in my arms. He died in tears. His last words were, “Frankie, I think I’m getting better.”

Ten years ago today, I buried my husband. Ten years ago today, I forgot like he did. I think I’m getting better…I hope that means that he’s coming back to take me home. I don’t know how much more of this loneliness I can stand.
